Big congratulations are in store for Patience Akok `22, as she was selected this past week as one of only 300 high school seniors in the country to earn a Gates Millennium Scholarship. The Gates program, established in 1999, provides full college tuition support for a student of color for the next four years! More than 37,000 students across the nation applied for this scholarship in 2022; Patience is among 0.8% of the applicants to earn the scholarship.
Patience has certainly excelled while at DeLaSalle. Entering DeLaSalle from Immaculate Conception grade school, she earned both a Presidential Scholarship from De and a Flaherty Family Foundation Scholarship to help defray tuition costs during the high school years. An outstanding student, Patience has earned a place on the High Honor Roll every semester while at De, and she has also been named a DeLaSalle Distinguished Scholar in the Class of 2022 for earning a grade point average of 4.0 or higher during her time on the island.
Moreover, Patience has also been an outstanding peer and leader while at DeLaSalle. Friends and teachers know her to be kind, hard-working, intelligent, collaborative and aware. She has been in Student Council for four years, finishing a term this year as Student Body Co-President. In that role, she has attended meetings of the DeLaSalle Board of Trustees as an ex-officio member of the Board and was featured in the Winter edition of Islanders Forever. She has also participated (and led) in a number of other co-curricular activity and athletic programs while at De, and she has been a student ambassador at many admissions and alumni events. And now… she adds the distinct title of Gates Millennium Scholar.
