Volleyball Advances to First-Ever State Tournament This Week

Good luck to the girls’ volleyball team,  as the Islanders have captured the Section 3AAA championship and will advance to the first State Tournament in DeLaSalle history!  How outstanding to have reached State after falling just short in four previous trips to section final matches.  This year, the Islanders defeated section foes Simley, Visitation, and Two Rivers (formerly Henry Sibley) over a ten-day stretch, with  the Islanders clearly playing their best volleyball at the end of the season.

The 2022 State Tournament will begin on Wednesday, November 9 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.    The Cinderella Islanders will play at 5:00pm, having drawn number one ranked and defending state champion, Marshall, in the quarter-final match.  The second round matches are  scheduled for the morning of Friday, November 11.   Should the Islanders advance to the finals, that game would be on Saturday, November 12.

The 2022  Islanders are a mix of veteran and young players who have kept getting better and better for sixth-year coach Chelsea Hoops and her staff.  Returning starters from the 2021 section finalists are outside hitter Ava Schwind `23, setter Lia de Sibour `24, and libero Erin Stauffer `24.  Seniors Sam Hames, Seriya Taylor, Miriam Unongo, and Fiona Burns have contributed with their play and as leaders throughout the year.  Junior Stephanie Salinas Hernandez has too.  Sophs Jordyn Johnson and Taletta Jones joined Schwing, de Sibour, and Hames on the All-Conference teams and  are key members of the starting rotation, while fellow sophs, Evan Ewert and Maya Sardon-Garrity, and  ninth grader, Aleccia Villalta, are talented reserves.

Best of luck to the Islanders in this first-ever trip to the big stage.  Our community is overflowing with pride for all that you have accomplished this year, and all Islander supporters will cheer loudly for all that will come this weekend.  Have fun, and respond with pride throughout the festivities of these upcoming days.  Go Islanders!  Take State DeLaSalle!
