Experiencing true Christian service for others enlivens in everyone involved an awareness of the immediate and life-long needs of those being served.
DeLaSalle High School considers Christian service an essential element in the formation of young people. Through service, teenagers develop compassion and empathy as well as grow in the knowledge of systematic changes necessary to eliminate pain, need, and neglect in our local and global communities. It is hoped that service experiences will instill in young people the desire to serve and work for solutions to unjust situations throughout their adult lives.
The Lasallian Ministry Office receives many, many requests for service each school year. These opportunities are announced to students by way of the Daily Bulletin, the Service Bulletin Board in the Florance Center, and postings in the Lasallian Ministry Office.
All DLS students complete at least 60 hours of volunteer Christian service during their high school years. By January of their 12th grade year, students must submit a reflection paper on the life lessons learned through service.
Upon completion of service hours and reflection paper, students receive a "P" (passing) grade and 1.5 required credits.
To record and report completed service hours students may
(1) use the form available in the Lasallian Ministry Office, or (2) submit
a note from their service site that names the type of service, dates and hours
of service, and a signature from the service supervisor.
